    STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Zoom
    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best saw I have Powerful no nonsense saw. Easy to start every time. Cut a bunch of 28 to 35 diameter Red Oak trees over the weekend. Cuts scary fast and strong so wear your chaps just in case. It's the biggest chainsaw I have and it means business. l used my ms 261 cem and ms 201cem for limbing and trimming. I recommend all three of these saws.i

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Starts every time Just went through a Tornado. This saw chewed through 17 10-20 inch trees that we blown over at the roots with no problems and very quickly with a skip tooth chain. Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great power to weight ratio I bought this saw to replace my 066. The older I get the heavier the saw seems to get.I put a 25" bar on the MS461. This seems to be a great combo. I was afraid I would give up to much power, but I hardly notice it. I still have my 066, but the MS461 is definitely my go to saw now. I also run a MS261. Everybody should try this lightweight powerhouse! Thank You Stihl for building great professional chain saws. The dealer (BINKLEY & HURST) was also great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw This is the best saw I’ve run to date. It was an abusive winter taking down a gnarly 20 acre stand. Snow, rain, mud, water. Everything awful was there. I was cutting up a 40” maple the fell into a creek, 12” deep. I slipped on ice that was under ther water and the saw was totally submerged, running, for 15-20 second. The beast never skipped a beat. Still ran like a top immediately after and still now 3 months later. I will be buying more as i expand this year

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New 461 Recently purchased an MS-461 with a 30 inch bar. Been using an o38 for 27 years, and it is older then that. But after using the new 461/30 inch I had my local shop order me another one with a 20 inch bar, witch I should get tomorrow. Its amazing how much better cutting wood is with a new and bigger saw that just gets stuff done!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very strong saw I’ve had this 491 for about a month and use it just for very large trees. I had the dealer put a 36” bar on it since it came with a 28”. I’ll keep the 28” for a spare but I cut very large oak abd pine mostly. This saw sped up my cut down time tremendously compared to the 391 I already had with a 25” bar. They’re both very strong and so far easy to crank and very dependable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size for an all around saw Picked one of these up a couple of months ago used, but with only about 6 tanks of fuel through it. Hadn't really planned on buying this saw as I recently purchased a 661, but I couldn't turn down the deal I got on it. I love this for a multi purpose saw, as it's not quite as heavy as the 661 for limbing, but it still has lots of power when you want to get into some of the bigger wood. One other thing I've observed is that this saw doesn't have the same antivibe system as the 661, but I don't notice any difference in the smoothness between the two when I'm cutting which really surprised me. I still love my 661, but its also nice to have this saw when running for a long period of time with a little less weight. I can also set each one up with the appropriate size bar, and not have to switch around. If I was forced to only run one saw, this would be the one I would use. I also like the fact that the 461 has almost an extra 7cc over the 441, yet they weigh nearly exactly the same.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best saw I've owned I've cut firewood for many years and this saw out performs any saw I had in the past. First used it on some large pin oaks with 32" base. Plenty of power to cut the extremely hard wood, I'm very happy with this saw. It seemed expensive but I quickly learned it was worth it. I bought my first set of chaps after running this saw. I've one issue with the saw and wondering if anyone else has had the same issue with their saw. I cut would all times of the year and only have issue when it's well below freezing. When I first run the saw when it's very cold out it starts fine. If I shut it off and let it set for quit awhile in the cold I can't get the decompress value to work. The button goes down but I can't pull the starter cord to get it started again. I have to put it in my truck and warm it up before the compression valve will work again. I asked the dealer about the problem and he said he hadn't heard of anyone having that problem. I read through a lot of reviews but didn't see anyone that had that problem. Guess I need to call Stihl and ask them what the problem could be. It doesn't effect the performance of the saw but is an inconvenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent power to weight I own two homes, one in town and the old family farm 60 miles away that has 60 acres (25 of them are woods). I wanted a saw powerful enough to handle the large Pecan and Oak trees on my farm, but light enough to use most of the day. That’s what led me to this saw with a 25 inch bar. This saw is a beast and doesn’t have any issues chewing it’s way through large timber with all 25 inches buried! If you have large timber and only want one saw, you just found it. I have a feeling that I will be picking up a smaller pro saw (like the MS 261 CM) to use on smaller jobs and limbs as I get tired at the 4 hour mark using this saw, but I think that’s respectable for an office worker. I also have my eye on a chainsaw mill and would like to get the MS 661 CM for that. Here’s the thing though, I’m in no hurry for either of these other saws as this MS 461 is a the perfect one saw does it all solution for me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I want in a chanisaw I have already cut several cords of firewood with this saw from small limb wood to a 30" black oak that had fallen in a storm. After deciding it was time to trade in my 044 which I had used for 28 years, I was stuck deciding if I wanted to go w/ a smaller saw or this slightly bigger saw. I'm very happy I went w/ the new MS 461 as I can push it as hard as I want, knowing its built tough enough to handle it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A REAL HANDFUL OF SAW!!! I have purchased other big box brands and decided 5yrs ago it was time for a REAL saw, I purchased a ms 271/18" bar, works excellent, needed longer bar so my dealer recommended an ms461, it came with a 20" bar I also purchased a 25" bar. First time out was a 28", next up a 42" elm..again wow. The power of this saw commands your respect, not for the inexperienced user, im a big guy 275# and this saw has put me in my place more than once, and I love it,I use both saws weekly. As far as cold starting...1.Stihl oil, non-ethanol premium gas, 2. Full choke until it pops, then one click up and it will start every time. I heat with wood, burn 7-8 cord a year, I depend on my Stihl saws,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw I have had an MS290 for about 8 years now for firewood and I just bought this for the bigger trees. The weight and balance is perfect with a 25 inch bar, but I got a 32 as well for the big stuff. The power is amazing, anti vibe works great. Decompression valve is nice for starting when the saw is hot. Elastostart works really well too especially when I don’t use the decompression valve.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real Deal, Not for Kids Put my 361 20" on a 30" black birch and it slowly made it through, but when the smoke started had to call time out. Price tag (as usual) was a gasp, but when I got back with the 461 28" and laid into it, my neighbor was the one gasping as I cut a 20 footer into stove length in under ten minutes. Read the other reviews, if you are used to a homeowner level saw this baby will have some surprises for you but wear your chaps and it's all good

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great p/w ratio. This saw made short work of a 16" base red oak. My 50cc saws could have done it but nowhere near as quick as this saw. A little hard to start the first time out but after a few start/stop cycles fired right up first couple of pulls. If you need a saw that turns big jobs into little jobs look no further, buy this saw!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from another stihl i should not have bought I needed a 36" saw for hurricane cleanup in south Florida. the only thing available the day after the storm was a MS461. I had to purchase the saw with a 25" bar and chain, and then buy the 36" bar and chain separate. I installed 36, ran it for a minute, then tightened the chain. The next day on the job it needed to make four cuts, that's all. It took us 20 minutes to get it started, same as the last handful of stihl's I bought and threw away the first day. It cut great and had a lot more power than I expected. The next job it had to make five cuts. Of course the chain came off after two cuts and took forever to restart. The next job was a repeat, hard to start and chain comes off. These big saws need a manual oiler. This is the last stihl I will ever buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Enough for 100 Year Old Red Oak I had a large Red Oak tree fall, and I figured the cost of getting it cut and hauled off would be roughly the cost of this saw, so I bought one with a 20" and 28" bar and chain. Next year had another Red Oak 108 years old fall. The 28" cut very well. Both trees cut up, and now I am cutting up two large Pecan trees. I had an issue with the saw starting initially, so I changed the spark plug out and problem solved. I've had to replace both the oil and gas caps--not what you'd expect on a saw just a few years old--but they are not expensive. I sharpen the saw myself, and some wood dulls the chain worse than others. Oak is much worse than Pecan or Pine. Also, cutting large vines will tend to stretch the chain more.Anyone who has been around saws knows that a hard-to-start saw is very frustrating. I am over 60, and I've known a few. MS 461 Starting is a breeze. I put the lever to FULL (cold start)choke, pull a few times until the saw almost starts, then switch over to RUN. The decompression valve helps starting also. My saw weighs 20lbs with fuel and the 20" bar, and with the normal reaching, the lower back gets a workout. I am planning on getting a smaller, lighter weight Stihl saw for cutting limbs and smaller trees. It is a good practice too having an extra saw in case your saw gets in a bind and the blade is stuck. I use this saw as needed on limbs and large trees. It performs very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this saw I've been cutting trees sense the 1980.My first STIHL was a MS310 and I like most of the StIHL equipment .I own the MS661 all the way down to MS150T. Pro saws are the way to go in my book. I traded in my MS460 for a lighter, smaller and faster MS362CM and love this for an all around finishing saw. But… I miss my MS460 and I'm going to buy another one soon. The MS460 fits in with the MS661CM for those old oak trees and stumps removal jobs. The home owners like the big boys playing in the front and back yards. They feel better about the price I charge when clean professional equipment is used. It's a way to tell the neighbors I'm not cheap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superior Power and Cutting Speed! I purchased this saw with a 25" bar at the fall harvest sale at my local dealer 3 weeks ago. I was using a 20" bar MS-311 and realized I needed more for the property I just purchased. When using the MS-461 with full throttle applied to a 20"+ tree, hold on tight and have solid footing because it will pull you forward fast and hard. I would not change anything. A+ to Stihl

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best saw in Stihl's lineup since the MS460 I've owned this saw for a little over two years, the first job I used in on, it paid for itself 3x over. I immediately installed a MaxFlow filter and a dual-port muffler, and adjusted the carb accordingly. Just replaced both crank bearings due to clutch side bearing failure, and replaced the piston while I was in there. Part of me feels that the bearing failure came prematurely, but this saw is my primary ground saw for felling big timber. I've hauled it 80'+ up into the tops of Pines, Firs, and Cedars with a 32"/36" bar and 36RSLF chain at least a few dozen times. So part of me feels it's earned the rights to the new parts. In the past, I would cringe a bit when looking at the price tags on Stihl products. However, the higher prices are directly reflected in the quality being (at least) a notch above. And what's a couple bucks if it's making you money and keeping the headaches away?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Saw!!! Good on gas, powerfull, and dependable! I have been using a 50 cc saw to cut up pulp cords of oak. I have back issues and wanted a saw with significant power to operate a 25" or greater bar so I wouldn't have to bend over nearly as far or as frequently as with my smaller saw. Man, this baby has power and cuts through the 25 to 30 inch oak logs like it's butter. I have the 25 inch bar on it and I just love how it cuts. It starts like a charm too. Great saw.
