Model Features
  • Zoom
    Wrap Handle (R)
Saw can be used in multiple positions for felling or limbing with hands in the proper positions.
  • Zoom
    Adjustable Automatic Oiler
The Adjustable Automatic Oiler allows the user to adjust the lubricant of the guide bar and saw chain for different bar lengths and cutting conditions.
  • Zoom
    STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Zoom
    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
Standard Features
  • Zoom
Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

MS 461 R is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best saws I've ever used This saw is very powerful. Keeps up with my dads 066 with a 25" bar! I can run this saw all day and not get tired of using it. I fell trees, buck and even limb this is a great all around saw! The wrap around handle is useful when felling trees. I recommend this saw to any logger!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST Overall Professional Saw This is the 3rd Chainsaw I have purchased this year, along with two Brushcutters/Clearing Saws. My old equipment was tired. My other two saws are an MS-362 C-M & an MS-661 R-CM. I thought the previous two would take care of my needs, but discovered that the MS-362 C-M is slightly "under-clutched". In other words, it releases way too soon given the power of the engine. This was slowing me down when cutting 12"+ rounds at firewood length. Also, the M-Tronic performance in the 362 has a slower throttle response than the 661 does...interesting.So, my decision to purchase the MS-461 R was based upon the speed at which I prefer to work. And, the 461 has Intellicarb, but not M-Tronic. The 461 & 880 are the only saws remaining with manually-adjustable carburetors. The replacement 462 model is being sold in Europe at this time & will be introduced here in a year or two. It will be the MS-462 other words, it will be M-Tronic equipped. The MS-441 & 461 will both be replaced by the MS-462 C-M. I tend to believe that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! The 461 has consistently received the overall highest ratings in the Stihl line. For those who like to customize their settings, or "hot rod" their saw, you better pick one of these up before they are phased out. When the word is out that the 462's are here, trust me, the remaining 461's will fly off the shelves! I recommend this saw particularly for those who have a "quick throttle" style of cutting while limbing or cutting logs into firewood lengths.Like my other two saws, I equipped this one with a Rollomatic ES Light Bar. My 461 has a 25" one. BEWARE of all the newer bars with the angular, smaller-diameter Bar oiling holes!!! READ my Product Review on "Guide Bars"; "Rollomatic ES Light". We have a PROBLEM on our hands with these. The MS462 C-M will be approximately 1-pound lighter with most of the weight savings coming from a lighter flywheel. I question the torque loss even though the M-Tronic feature speeds up the carburetor response.Of my three saws, the MS-461 R will receive the most use due to superior versatility, hence the "BEST Overall Professional Saw" Review Summary!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just right for big jobs This is the saw the local logger use the most. It has lots of power and you can still carry it. It will take a 32" bar, I have a 28" on it and it cut through wood like butter. I have 6 Sthil chainsaws two are pole saws, this is my biggest one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Upgrade! I live up in a small mountain range in central NJ, and we're overloaded with big old red oak, ash and beech up here. I've had a MS290 with a 20" bar for about 8 years now (cut my chops on an old 029 with a crazy local tree guy in my youth), and that saw has been a work horse, never letting me down. As time has passed here, more and more big trees (3ft+ diameter) keep falling in all the storms, plus my local tree guys keep dropping off bigger and bigger logs/trunks for my wood pile. I decided it was time to add an upgrade saw.I did my homework, tested out a few models (362CM, 441CM, 461R and 661CM-R) and decided on the 461R with a 25" bar. I got it about 2.5 yrs ago, and all it does is amaze me and anyone I work with by the power and ease as it rips through anything up here. After a few months, I added the 36" ES Light bar w/full skip chain, and have successfully felled/bucked some of the biggest oaks (45" single trunk and 7+ft, multi-trunk monsters) you can find with no hangups. It's amazing that a saw this big does not feel that heavy or is a burden to use (I've gone 2+ hour sessions straight with it and never feel worn out from using it)! The ES Light bars make a huge difference as you go bigger. Maintenance/cleaning is a snap, as Stihl did a great job on the design. I also got help from my local dealer to identify the part number for and order the rubber "Scrench" mount for the wrap handle (standard on the rescue model), which adds an invaluable storage/access feature (as the wrap handle models will not fit in the Stihl cases where you would normally store this). As others have commented, a well weighted, easy to manage, powerhouse of a saw. If you have the need, be it for larger size personal or professional use, you can't get better bang for the buck than this saw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 461R - Hold on, it's a beast! I've added this saw to my fleet as I needed a powerful saw for felling and bucking up the old growth oaks that I have on my property. I did a lot of research on the 461R prior to buying it, and with the Stihl saws that I have, all pro saws, this one fits into a range where it will handle with ease large diameter felling and following up with bucking larger logs for firewood. I have mine setup with the 25" bar and run the 36RM chain. It bites into the wood hard, a little too hard at times, and there is noting yet that I have cut into that will bog it down. It is breaking in nicely as with each tank of fuel it gets better. What a beast, but I will admit that with the longer ES bar on it does wear you down after a while. The only thing I would look into is a lighter version bar and as mentioned before a prefilter sock over the HD air filter. The wrap handle does help in awkward cutting positions as well.Overall this is a fantastic engineered and designed saw and fits a range that will work for just about any cutting needs. The quality of the parts and the fit and finish are top notch. This saw will compliment perfectly a smaller lighter weight saws for limbing and cleanup jobs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Munchaholic - Wow This Saw Eats! I upgraded to this saw after owning the 311 for a year due to the 391 and 461 being sold out at the time. The 461 is about twice the price and has 50% more horsepower than the 311 but only 2 pounds heavier. The dealer will always tell you something that I have found to be very true - pick the saw you think will work best then buy the next size bigger. This 461 came with a 25" bar and I purchased a longer 32" also for the big trees. All new / newer Stihl saws like fresh gas - so if your saw sits more than a couple of weeks, dump the old and give it some fresh - some of the reviews say hard starting on most saws. All in all the 461 is the best I have ever used / owned.
